Hey you. It's business pants. And I'm that guy that keeps doing business pants by himself live from under a broken bamboo ceiling. It's a Monday updated edition of business pants brought to you by S gauge your ESD data provider, Damien will be back tomorrow. I'm your host and I'm an idiot. truer words were never said, actually, Damian would have to agree, I think and today's What kind of bag do we have Damian? Oh, you're not here. It's an all table. Trance that is October 21st or 24th 2022. We have Indian replacement Theory, chicken Wars, luddites are back in a short which is everybody's favorite and by everybody I mean nobody because nobody cares, nobody watches but let's do it. Because the big stories from this weekend are in first up Indian CEO replacement Theory, update Rishi sunak will be the next UK prime minister, after his main rival, Drops Out by main rival, they do mean the other person who wasn't Boris Johnson who also dropped out because Lord knows we don't give enough white guys full of scandals a second chance so I'm I'm glad we can finally now it down. This is a big deal I win. Isn't it diversity wins first Hindu prime minister in the UK ever? The youngest at 42 years old, and more than 200 years actually looks, like, maybe even 300 years because 300 years ago, William convention, the fourth Duke of Devonshire was the pm at age 37. So at 42 years, he's young but this completes Damien's favorite new Theory, which is the South Asian, CEO handoff rule. South Asian CEOs. They come in, they clean up a mess made by Founders or prior leaders. They're quiet and unassuming. They don't have to worry about being told their shrill, like their female counterparts and there's now a short history of bamboo ceiling Breakers. Now, don't get angry at me for that term because I didn't make it up. I read that, that was actually a term. I read out of India times called bamboo ceiling. The bamboo ceiling? How many ceilings can we come up with? But think about it, sooner pichai Sacha and Adela Shantanu, Narayan, who's the CEO of Adobe in George kurian. CEO of NetApp. These this is like a thing. It's a thing and we call it here first. We've been calling it for years Damien's. Been all over it. That's our big update over the weekend. There's not much else to say about it, except that can congratulations, UK for not sinking into the ocean entirely. Next up is our chicken Wars update. Here's the headline. Smoked chicken is the new roast chicken. This is an actual article out of Forbes Forbes, the business magazine who gave a recipe for smoked chicken and in their in this article. But it does conform with the next headline. Which is AXA, I am to quote, systematically exclude red meat from events. That's right. AXA Investment Management. The French insurer and asset manager will no longer. Have read meat available at its events. Number one, huge deal because this is a French company. We're talking about, is there anything more French than a pile of red meat? I mean, steak tartare is actually a pile of ground red meat that you just eat without it being cooked. Like this is that seems like big news. But number two, have we entered the big, chicken era. Winners of the big chicken hero would include Tyson Foods when not giving its slaughterhouse workers covid or smartly offloading Knows by biting Executives to rival startups. Tyson is busy maintaining its status as a fake public company, with dual class shares family ownership and a transport. And one of the whitest boards with John Mariner, as the sole black director on the board. He was the first added to the board since Lloyd Hackley left in 2010, which probably makes sense. Because, as far as I can tell, black people, Asian people, Hispanics, they don't eat chicken right? Nobody eats chicken except for us, white, dudes. That's what I that's That's true, right truths. And then there's also in the in the winning, the big chicken era beyond meat, obviously who just laid off 19% of its staff, including anyone with a track record of biting, a man's nose off at a football game. See how those two kind of work together. They worked together, those two and finally winning the big chicken era. And this is, your placing, your long beds. Here's one to plays Coastal Carolina University. Whose mascot is the chant to clear chicken, which is both delicious, and not. And currently allowed at acts of events, it won't be excluded. It's not excluded from the AXA event rule, Now, next up and update in Big Data, Big Data of the source of my angst. Here's a headline. Why teens are giving up their smartphones in joining the Luddite Club? Gen X is back, baby. We're back. We're cool again because back then it wasn't called the club it's called being alive. Except in those days you had to go find a payphone and frantically call your parents and explain to them how exactly you manage to get to Boston without them. Knowing and simultaneously had no plan back except to borrow a quarter from somebody. Use it at the pay phone and explain it half the time, you wouldn't even use the quarter, you drop it in the machine. Are you, are you call collect and you're the name of the collect? It would say, like, who's calling? And you'd give the name and the name would be Mom, Dad, I'm in, Boston, I'm at South Station. I need you to pick me up quickly by And then it would play. Like, would you accept a collect call from Mom Dad? I'm in Boston. And I'm at South Station, could you call me by? And you just hang up and hopefully you'd wait an hour and a half and they'd show up. I mean, that's called winning. That's what we're going back to. And maybe this story is coming out now because it's coming on the back of this headline and or study, here's the headline feeling. Burnt out the stress of toggling between apps with the alt tab buttons. May be to blame study suggests. Yes, a Harvard Business Review, study found that employees. Spend a total of five working weeks a year hitting all table between different Applications. Alt tab. That's been our problem. I think Ari right now, basically her fingers are glued to allton table, that's basically what it is. She's wasting five working weeks of free float time a year toggling between apps so to join the ludic club. Is the club of teens in New York City that are meeting. You will have to visit a library, which is terrifying, to anybody who's not part of genetics. It's a place with books. You actually have to like you read out of the books. You can't look down at the thing. The Only Rule is no smartphone and they meet once a week at the library. So feel free to go to a New York Public Library and join the Luddite Club. There's also this story out of Big Data as a source of my angst. In X tiktok moderator, who was paid ten dollars a day and had to scroll through child abuse and gun violence was required to keep her webcam on all night. Report says, this is a former tiktok moderator. Who's working remotely based out of I think Columbia for for a paris-based company Teleperformance that offered moderation Services. She earned ten dollars a day and she said she had to keep her camera on continuously during her night shift. The company also told her quotes that no one should be in view of the camera and was only allowed a drink in a transparent Cup on her desk. So let me get this straight. We are high. We are Outsourcing the moderation of the most terrible aspects of humanity. For ten dollars a day to people in countries where when they go outside, sometimes they actually are in view of the real horrific parts of humanity. Let's do that. First of all, second of all, They have to pay someone to watch the moderators to make sure their moderating, so we have multiple layers of moderation going on. To solve part of this problem though, free float, since we're in the solving business, we've created board sabermetrics to solve your board. We've actually been working on a line of transparent free-float coffee, cups, that you can fill with whiskey, but are it's digitally transformed to look like a mochachino. So anytime you have a long night where you have to watch child abuse videos as a career, There you go. Now, you can drink whatever you want in a free float coffee cup. We'll let you know when those hits sometimes in 2027 and finally The last headline out of big data is the source of my angst. This is the headline, the fantasy of instant delivery is imploding. I can wish. It completes our Luddite Trifecta, don't you think? Um, I think we should go back to a time when things took a long time to get to you, like there were male order catalogs, you would get a catalog in the mail. You would write something a check down and then you send it to a PO Box that you had no idea you sent money. To a mailbox, somebody got the money and looked at your checklist and then sent you stuff and it showed up, like two months later. And you know, we weren't unhappy with that. No one was like, man. I really wish I got those Halloween themed oven mitts significantly faster because I needed them without them. My life is incomplete. And finally, just a quick before I do the nerd alert, I want to do a quick go. Fuck yourself update, here's the headline Mark. Zuckerberg's private jet made 28 trips and just two months emitting 15 times more carbon than the average American does in a year report says we have free float, have this to say, go fuck yourself, mark. Let's end on a short nerd. Alert, shall we? I'm going to do this with no exposition. Because there's no point. This is pretty short and sweet. We're gonna keep the show short and sweet. Here's the paper from authors, Edo bomb, delete Gaffney and Ruthie Lowenstein published in March of this year. The title of the paper was gender and corporate crime. Do women on the board of directors, reduce corporate bad behavior. Here's the quote, our key findings indicated clear correlation between the proportion of women on the board and the involvement of the corporation or its top Executives in violations of the law. As the proportion of women in the boardroom increases the involvement of Corporations and their Executives and violations of the law diminishes, our analysis of our data shows that every increase of 1% in the representation of women, on the board of directors is associated with the decrease of four to five and a half percent, depending on the model in the probability that a corporation and its top Executives will be involved in normative deviants compared to the probability of being compliant. This finding is robust and persists, after controlling, for other variables. Do you need? Do you need more? Do we need more? Do we have to have more discussion about why diversity good idea or Eastern of studies and data and stuff and how it's not? Whoa. It's not woke to want to comply with. All right, I'm gonna stop. That's it. It's a short Monday, catch up. Business pants. October 24th, 2022 tomorrow. Damian is supposed to be back. See if that actually happens. But until then I was your host. Matt mascardi, come back, subscribe, share, do all the stuff.
