Kiss cam surveillance, director “license”, baby antisemitic Grok, and “woke” is dead

Discussed in this episode

Show Notes

Your thoughts on the kiss-cam episode Andrew Ross Sorkin’s note yesterday about Andy Byron, the C.E.O. of a tech start-up caught on camera with a colleague from H.R. at a Coldplay concert, struck a nerve with DealBook readers, who have flooded our inbox with responses: “The moment seems to encapsulate the pervasive schadenfreude within our culture, especially our office culture, and a deep-seated animosity toward bosses and colleagues,” Andrew wrote. “It highlights a zero-sum mentality in which a colleague’s success is perceived as your loss, and their failure your gain.” He added that, “The incident also underscores our surveillance state.” Here’s what readers had to say: “The surveillance state is a bit aggressive of a take on this. They were lovingly embracing at a concert during a love song while the kiss cam was on the prowl.” — Bob McMurtry “The public is not just reacting to someone else’s misfortune, it is reacting to the utter hypocrisy revealed yet again by those in power who dictate rules that others should follow, yet arrogantly disregard following them themselves. Employees endure hours of H.R. training on the impropriety of workplace relationships, especially between manager and subordinate, yet the actual HEAD of H.R. engages in an affair with her married C.E.O. Do you not see the specific irony of this outing?” — Jim Woidat “I don’t think we commoners’ resentment of C.E.O.s is so much about jealousy as it is about pay inequality (their pay rate today vs. what it was a few decades ago) and stuff like golden parachutes.” — Tom Eshbaugh What nobody is talking about: Before the kisscam: 12 executives (11 men and Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot); 6 directors (all men) They’ve also disabled their LinkedIn links and yet Astronomer board launches investigation after viral Coldplay 'kiss cam' video appears to show CEO embracing HR chief DealBook Hot Take: Board members should be licensed Jonathan Foster, a consultant and former managing director at Lazard, has served on more than 50 corporate boards. Along the way, he says, he has encountered directors who have stayed too long, or ones whose “knowledge of financial statements and M&A is lacking.” He drew on that experience in “On Board: The Modern Playbook for Corporate Governance,” his new book. One of his big ideas for improving director performance: “a license,” he told DealBook, like the kind required “for investment bankers, doctors, lawyers, even massage therapists.” That, he said, “might increase confidence in corporate directors.” How it would work: Some of the requirements Foster envisions include 10 years of work experience, being at least 35 and passing an exam covering legal standards, basic accounting and finance principles, and ethics . “It doesn’t have to be particularly onerous,” he said, comparing it to the Series 7 exam for financial advisers. To issue licenses, he says, the New York Stock Exchange could oversee an organization like Harvard Business School or the National Association of Corporate Directors. He says he sees the arrangement as akin to how the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board operates under the authority of the S.E.C. That independent nonprofit group, he noted, “has commissioners, and they go do their thing, but they’re ultimately responsible to and can be pre-empted by the S.E.C.” Is it workable? DealBook asked Edward Rock, a professor of corporate governance at the New York University School of Law. He said he worried that standardized requirements for diverse companies could disqualify board members with otherwise strong attributes . For example, he wrote in an email to DealBook, “Why would anyone want to prevent Mark Zuckerberg (28 at the time of Facebook’s I.P.O.) or Larry Page and Sergey Brin” — both in their thirties when Google listed — “from serving on the board of directors of Facebook and Google?” ( Foster said exceptions could be created, including for founders .) Oh yeah. Ready. Ready live. from the Bob, monks is Non-performing assets, long tenure director Museum. This is a Terrible. Ear hair filled Museum that is I don't want to go to that museum. It's an all-new Terrific. Tuesday edition of business pants. Joined by analysts whole mattress guarding. Whoa, yeah whoa. Whoa, on today's you can't spell Devil Without Dei called July, 22nd 2025, all the stories I missed. That either I don't care about or I'm completely sick of while I was gone. That's it. That's Can I say not even a game? Are you can make it a game you could guess whether you think I'm sick of it or I don't care like I could be the game. Oh I like that actually is maybe my favorite game you've ever come up with you say that CEI. Yeah. You know you can't spell Devil's. Robbie Starbucks. Definitely gonna take that he. The original joke was going to be you can't spell delicious with a d e. I should have, I should have went with that one. Yeah. I mean you just gave fodder to the Ravi Starbucks of the world. I mean, citizen journalists III a headline. I did not pick this week. Is that a doctor? So Dr. Phil had a huge anti-woke Network, some big surprise. It failed miserably. I can't, I'm shocked. And now he there's a new headline claiming he wants to get back in the game as a citizen journalist. So it's just, oh, this horrible term is now taking over the, the anti-wolf people like it's their is their way of saying that. I'm just a schmuck who hates people and I want to get involved. Where can I get involved? Can we be citizen proxy advisors or citizen data analysts know, we're not too, in the left. It's not, it's not the same thing. Is there any version of this? No. Because you have to be on qualified to play this game. Oh, you can't have a background. So you you've come from years of experience and your field that doesn't work on the right. You have to just be angry at women. I think that's it. That's it. Black people that's qualification. I like that. Okay, our show today is being sponsored by free, float analytics and free flow, analytics.com. The only platform measuring board power connections performance for free. The audience kind of gave up there and they were like enough of this? Yeah, yeah. They don't want to hear about the sponsors. it's a fun database sometimes if you're a nerd like me because I saw a headlines saying that this Italian Bank, a Tau una Benco, Was voted the most, like leader and diversity or something. I don't know. Like the best most diverse company. And I looked it up on our database, there's like a 15-person board with two women on it with no leadership. But that's seems like a win. All right. You ready to go? I ready? Yeah, so yeah, so, remind me again, you didn't care about it either, I don't care. I'm sick of it. And I remind you, I went on vacation last week. I was gone. I was for a good portion of it. I didn't have any internet so I didn't know anything that was going on. The only thing came back and you opened up the news and the thought. Wow I really don't care about that. Yeah or I'm so sick of that. I would tell you the only news story I heard which I'm not covering is the guy who runs this place. I went to told me that Rupert Murdoch had posted his company had posted a letter Wall Street Journal. Against Trump or something. And that, you know, that was the big news and I'm already hearing that, Trump has kicked out. The Wall Street Journal out of his press Corps. So there's some kind of fight. Yeah, Epstein it's Epstein related but I didn't touch. And in fact, as a favorite of the audience, the last second decision. I had a whole section about Elon Musk All kinds of stuff. Like at least six or seven heads headlines. I cross them out. I don't care. I'm done. I don't know. I should just this week. I don't. I would guess sick of it. I don't want that section. It's so sick of it. I crossed it out. All right. Let's start with the biggest story and really this is like The story. The oddly. Gives Credence so our media company, right? I mean this is like like the full culmination of why everyone needs our media company. Even though I don't understand why we're not billionaires. So, while we're gone, I know you know the story the CEO of some stupid tech company. His name is Andy Byron. Oh yeah, was caught kissing. Not kissing kissing a woman on a kiss cam at a Coldplay holding. Okay whatever loving romantically romantically cuddling cuddling at a Coldplay concert turns out that he's a CEO of a company and he was he was canoodling with the chief people officer from his leadership team and it's not his wife. This is the story. It went viral and he even went very free flow. Like, not only did it go viral and this is the kind of story that we cover, we do best at. Yeah, we joke at about these, but we also we know we don't do it as much as we used to, but I think we're gonna get into it again in the future, but we used to do a bunch of like parodies, ESG onions, fake apologies. There was even 100 headline about a fake apology like that was coming out from this. There's just all kinds of media craziness around this one story five, right? Yeah, finally called. So here's my perspective on the story and you could, I, you can ask, you can guess whether I just don't care, or I'm sick of it, but I always check deal book every morning. This is Andrew Ross, sorkin's deal book, which really reads. Like it reminds me of Jeffrey saut. Seems like a big Love Letter to see Oh's. Do you know the Andrew Ross in studyed know? Okay, I didn't even know that that's real. I'm just mining. I've talked to Jeff Seinfeld about it. I'm just mining it for stories often. I don't use any of it because again, it just seems like, I don't know. It just seems heavily biased and I don't trust it completely. But here is Andrew Ross, sorkin's perspective on this story. This cold place, CEO story. And that's what I'm gonna base my reporting on. He said, the moment seems to encapsulate the pervasive Schaden freuda, which is Sean. Ford is like, where we take pleasure in other people's pain essentially. Yeah, within our culture, especially our office culture, in a deep-seated animosity, toward bosses and colleagues. The incident also underscores our surveillance State. I mean, To me, this is the craziest that's the surveillance state. But all of this is just bizarre to me, of course they posted some readers responses and saying that things like, no, the reason why we hate CEOs is that they, you know, the, you know, the pay inequality stuff that we mentioned in that, you know, the surveillance state is bullshit because you go to any concert and and gain these days, there's always a kiss cam. And and anyway, it was just so weird way for Andrew Ross, Sorkin to talk. I mean, You're making out with your Chief people officer, these are the people, I mean, your CEO and your Chief people officer the ones who kind of sets ethical standards at your company. I mean, I don't know, Andrew, it's a little, it's a little bizarre, defensive reaction to the story, but what is the new thing here? Like, what? So, wait, kiss cams have been around for 40 years, right? Like so yeah, it's not like you go to a show or a concert or anything and don't think I could end up on camera like everybody could end up on camera number one. Number two. Happy people love it. Yeah. Encapsulating like the like he's saying it encapsulates a moment in our culture where we have animosity towards Boston. I don't understand how we always had an mlc towards Boston. Yeah, like does he were bosses? Does he know? Listen to our show is, you know, here all the headlines about the Sam altmans and Mark Zuckerberg's of the world. Well, speaking of the Mark Zuckerberg's of the world, and then you're saying this underscores, the surveillance State. The surveillance state is the kiss this. Yeah. Like we literally know, like the brand of diapers, you use like adult diapers you use like the what? It's a weird. It's just very son on a field. I take no credit for that comparison, but this is very son and feldy into me. It's just It's just a weird defensive reaction. We don't. Want Andrew. You don't have to love every CEO. They're not all also. How could you possibly turn? A. CEO, who has the power and the organization. Using part of that power. To be with a woman who's not his wife. Like there's a parent imbalance and we're looking at, he's looking at that and saying it's rude of us and we are delighting in his demise. Yeah. Really like that's that's not the thing. The thing you should be looking at, is, what is he doing, right? Like what, like, what you, what is he doing? You mean? Who's who goes to Coldplay concert? Is that? What? You're? Referring? To? Really? Really the biggest story has to take away. What are you doing in Coldplay? All right, but here's okay. There Matt, I mean I don't think God it's been a while. I wish. Okay, one thing. So what we do here is we tirelessly tag news headlines, but what we don't do is we don't have any metrics. So if I see a headline 80 times, I try my best to tag at once, right? I don't try to over tag it so it floods our system. So we what we don't have is the metrics for what the business news cares about. I don't, I don't remember a story in recent memory more covered than this one. It is flooding. Our Newsfeed. It is everywhere it. I really, it's just watch every video. It's just, it's cringy. That's why it's everywhere. It's okay, kind of, but, but look, yeah, Andrew, I know, you you're listening. Yes, let's pretend that it was Andy Byron CEO of tech startup and his secretary. Yeah. Now, do we feel a little less cool about it? Let's pretend it was a middle manager. And the intern. But what about our deep sea animal City towards our bosses? What? What about it? Like, literally, every like like Andrew Ross, Sorkin goes to work. Every single day is wicked happy with this editorial like this. Nobody editors nobody hates their bosses when they're good bosses. And I mean, so that I don't even understand that statement to begin with, we only hate people who are underperforming or aren't good at their jobs. We don't we generally like dislike, anybody who tells us what to do, that's generally what? Okay, so here's the, here's my point. I can't believe. I actually have a point in all this. It's hard. I'm waiting for it because this is already been long-winded. I didn't even want to cover the story. Here's what nobody is talking about other than us, so you really should come to us for all stories. And I, I read too many stories about this. So I looked at the data and this is what we do we like to kind of analyze the data. And yeah I know you can't make his cam data. Yes you can't make huge assumptions based on one company but I like to because that's how I roll. Okay, I I blow everything out of proportion, that's how I do it. So I looked at the way back machine, I wanted to look at the executives in the directors at this company, before this kiss, cam incident happened because, you know, the it's been changed a little bit. In fact, they've the company is disabled their LinkedIn links so Fu astronomer. I mean, what? Yeah, Show You by hiding? Yeah. We can't, like, talk to you now. Like, that's your punishment, but anyway, so before. So, when this kiss happened, this was the makeup of the company and this is the thing that I shall about continuously at this stupid podcast, There were 12 Executives astronomer. 11 of them were men. The way the woman was Chief people officer, Kristen Cabot. I'm so shocked. Okay. There were six directors astronomer, all six were men. I mean, come on. I mean this, what do you expect? I'm sorry. And then and then to make it worse. Yeah. The one woman is having an affair with the CEO. So like, literally, you can't even say that the, the one woman had any power in that room and like, and here's how the and here's how the companies reacting there. The board is gonna launch an investigation. So these broads, these dudes are gonna launch investigation and I want to get to the bottom of it. And the new in terms CEO is one of the two co-founders who write, who ran the company. So, it's like, what are we saw that? Come on. I mean, this is your culture astronomer. I mean, I don't know. That's all forget. That forget the stronger did. That's speaks directly to mail calls that that's To the deep-seated animosity, towards bosses and colleagues. Yeah, maybe we don't like our bosses and colleagues because when one of them, abuses their power, the next one is that guy's buddy, another dude who's going to oversee the sort of like, you know, makeup of the for the corporation, like, you know, CEO Dara, Uber took over immediately after Travis kalanick and Uber continued to do horrible things, right? Like like so what, maybe that's what we don't like. Maybe that's the culture, we don't like, I'm gonna vote that, you are sick of it with this one. I think this actually might be. This is a trick question of this one. I'm sick of it and I don't care. Now, let me wrap this up, let me wrap this up by by once again. Proving why? I think this is important that the culture there was run completely by men. So, one of the things I did last week is I went with three Former msci calls to a WNBA game at the Garden, Boston Garden. Yeah, Caitlin Clark, and the Connecticut, blah, blah, blah, and my takeaway. First of all, these are my new favorite three. My new favorite three msci, college or D3. I went with Matt. You've been demoted, you're, you're not in the top three anymore. I'm okay with that. Okay, so these are my new. So if you're listening you guys are my top three favorites. I love, I love you forever only, yeah. My takeaway was when you subtract a bunch of men, a bunch of drunken men from anything in our society, it suddenly becomes a wonderful place to be of whatever. Yeah, everything was better. Everything was better. Just having a game with Phil a woman full of everything was better. I feel relaxed, I felt happy I went I wasn't tents that somebody was gonna punch me if I like drop my pretzel on their foot or it was just easier as relaxed. So we went to go see page viewer page her Connecticut debut and it was fabulous. The energy the game was great, it was good wnba's got a going on that's right defect that they paid them less than people make a msci. I'm just saying, all right, that's it. Let's go. Let's move on. Yeah, wasn't a lot. Yeah, that was a lot and I'm going to stay with deal book for one more. I don't talk about deal book ever but in this same in the same deal book that he was talking about. This was weird perspective, on the astronomer story, he had a hot take, he was talking to a guy named Jonathan Foster, who is a former managing director at Lazard, who served on more than 50 corporate board does that possible. All right? It's possible. I'll stop talking. It sounds like a lot. This is from deal book and the in the title of this section was board members should be licensed. He has this idea that all directors should have a license and some of the requirements Envision he envisions could be 10 years of work, experience being at least 35 years, old passing, an exam, covering legal standards basic accounting, Finance principles, and ethics of all things. Of course, a professor of corporate governance and NYU Edward rocks, said that he worried that standardized requirements by diverse companies. Could disqualify board members with otherwise, strong attributes and then Foster responded by saying well okay we could create exceptions like for Founders. So in this, so the first version we're already we have already breaking down the whole system, but I just thought this was cute. That we, that he thinks that people even pay attention to board directors, and other than us, that he thinks that people pay attention to directors in the first place. But I don't know, I this, this was cute. I thought this was cute. I mean, he just sounds like a professional director. He is in our database, he's on three boards right now, Lear Barry Global and 5.0 things and he's a decent, he's a performer. He said shareholders have an incentive to demand the most qualified board members he said yeah do they do they do? Board. What are we talking? Data. They don't pay attention to any of this. I mean, he's just talking about and why why is Andrew Ross circuit? Not picking up on the fact that investors don't notice any of this, they don't notice anything. Why doesn't Andrew Ross? Sorkin say everybody who's ever been nominated for a board, gets 96% a favor. Like what he likes the license accomplish right like, well, they'll get 97% in favor like they're more qualified. What do we talking about? I don't know. It's just like again, it's more like son, and felony and nonsense. I don't think of it. This, this one I'm guessing is Damian sick of it. That's a correct answer. All right, now we can get start to move a little more quickly because I don't, I that those are my two long-winded one the next headline. I don't know if you've seen all this all week. They're talk Trump and Coke, Coca-Cola will. Now roll out cane sugar version of soda this fall. Matt, this this was one of the biggest stories of the week sugar, in the coke is there is the reason this is a big story because it was sort of like a weird Trump Bryant Trump trump is bragging, that he claims that he called them and basically made this happen, and I don't know if it's anything to do with RFK Jr, but I love that these feebleminded losers. Think that just replacing corn syrup with sugar. So suddenly makes this horrible dream healthy like, what are we doing? It? Are we? Yeah, like me while like everyone's on ozempic in this country so that they don't want Coke and good luck with the figuring out, the fact that it's corn subsidies that are basically propping up the entire farming industry in the US. I mean, good luck. Figuring out how to unwind that faster. This one is that I don't care. Okay, good. That's that's the correct answer. Private jet sales are poised for takeoff. Thanks to a revived tax, break federal tax changed. Now, let's companies write off the full cost. Of buying a private jet in the first year. How about that one? That's a good one, right? I guess. Yeah. Those are winning again. Are they? Um, like look, they they have to disclose the use of the private jet as part of their compensation, right? And you read out these packages all the time and which they get like use of the private jet for them their family. Their uncle named Todd their their next door neighbor when they have to watch the dog. Like, didn't they already have plenty of perks? I don't understand. Great. Now, they rated off in the first year like well, everyone's sitting on the point. Yeah, well, everyone on their hands and worried that the people are upset about ESG, the all the gains in the last, like 30 years of being wiped out, like, everything is going to be wiped out. That's all I'm gonna say. So you better start paying attention and start trying to figure out ways to fight this back because so this one sounds like sick of it based on. Yeah, I'm definitely sick of it. I'm sick of everything happening and no one doing anything. How about this one? Starbuck's formerly remote. CEO has bought a home in Seattle. Now, he's ordering all staff. Back to the office, four days a week. So, He's magically in Seattle now. So now he's reversing a work policies and making everybody come in. How about that? Like they're Brian Nichols. Yeah. There's a there's a thank you for naming the CEO because the formerly remote was how they referred. I don't know. I mean, I know I've been joking about this for years but why why can't you put a name is like a little too many characters to add nickel? Yeah. Like um I mean this is this is like I mean this guy runs the biggest drug Empire in America. I mean, you know, this is this is like the this is like Brian Cranston and Breaking Bad. I mean, we can't name this guy. I mean, come on. Well, I mean I, this is all this is now like now all anybody, all these CEOs, the only thing they do is they wait around for one of them to do a thing first. Whether it's paid Trump abroad. Fire. 70% of your staff work remotely, but make everybody go back to work, right, whatever. The thing is, they do they wait for somebody to do it first and then they all do it. So now everyone's back in the office because why it wasn't, like, did Starbucks fall into the ocean. During the time, people were working. Remotely. Did did Finance. So did anyone make less money when everyone was working remotely? If you didn't make less money than what do you complaining about? Why are you complaining that everyone needs to get back to the office? Here's what this story tells me is that I I'm like scratching my head trying to figure this out. Can we find anything? Is there anything? A CEO can do? Is there any way that anything negative can ever happen against the CEO unless you're kissing yes? Right. Because because surveillance State, this guy gets money to join. He gets any benefit, he wants, he can fly in and if he were to leave tomorrow, he would get a package. He can just change the rule. I mean, what is the CEO? These CEO really the name, executive offers CFOs included. They can't even when they screw up they get paid. I mean there's really just there, there's nothing they can do. I mean there's a board support them, six, right? After starting is just bizarre, I mean they're just they're treated like royalty in this country. Yeah. Which is weird to me. All right. Yeah, my sick of it, or do I not care? Oh, good question. A sick of it. Sick of it is right. Okay Jeff Bezos Taps former Amazon, Alexa head to lead 10 billion dollar Earth fund. I picked this one because I love it. There they, this is the proof that nobody that rich people CEOs, do not care about our environment. Because you're picking the, the guy from this disastrous Alexa program which nobody uses everybody hates lost the company billions of dollars, this is the guy, this is the person. I don't even know if it's a guy. I was exhaustive search looking for just the right person. Retail things Tom Taylor called the Earth fund. Yeah. Did he have a background in environmental like economics or research or does he a climatologist? Is I mean I know he's an engineer but isn't he didn't? He work at like according to his LinkedIn. He worked for five years as the Director of operations at K2 Sports making ski and snowboards. For that's almost environmental. That's close to environmental about this weird coincidence so the it's a 10 billion dollar Earth fund the fur I quickly Googled Alexa the first headline that comes up is Amazon, Alexa is a colossal, failure on Pace to lose, 10 billion dollars this year so. Oh, so maybe I don't know what's happening here. Yeah, Amazon Earth fund has 10 billion dollars in it, so maybe the plan is for him to give the 10 billion to Alexa. I'm just glad that Tom Taylor, you know, fail that spectacularly in Stills and charge of something super important, especially saving our Earth. I just it's cute. I just think it's pretty quick that two years ago or three years ago. So that his fault anymore. All right. Yeah. That one you don't care, don't care? Yeah. Oh maybe I'm also a little maybe I'm also a little sick of the fact that you can't kill and sick of it. Can't fail. You can't feel I'm ruining my own game as it goes along. Okay, there's a bunch of creepy. AI open AI. Kind of stuff that we Missed the last week opening AI warns that this is real. This is all this is real map by the way. This isn't, I don't, this isn't from like, you know, Doug calm. This is from Fortune Magazine. Open AI warns that it's new chat GPT agent has the ability to Aid dangerous. Bio weapon development. Why is it warn that? Why isn't it just stopped that? Yeah yeah okay there are two things. First of all, stopped it before you have to get to the warning stage and second of all why are you telling potentially horrible people that you should go there to figure out? Buy a weapons? Wait so yeah, go on. Chad GPT right now and be like how do I make a bio weapon? Yes, that's what I guess. So okay, here's I wouldn't have thought that and now I think that here's the background of the story. Some other headlines, a staggering proportion of teens say talking to AI is better than real life friends. Oh boo, Elon Musk announces baby. Grok AI chatbot design, specifically for children's learning needs that the future anti-Semitism is. He hate people tell a gram CEO Pavel durov talking, he's talking about the French probe against Elon musk's Twitter. He says, at this point, any tech company can be declared a criminal gang in France and that such investigation can be harmful for Attracting Investments. Oh, but can we applaud France? Because I think that's the right language to say that. Yes, these are criminal gangs essentially I well I like appreciating this The negative there is they can't attract Investments like the positive are. I could they are stopping criminal. Yeah. Like I care about your Investment Portfolio like really Colombian drug lord being like, you know, if you prosecute me, who's gonna invest in Colombian drugs? Speaking of crime bosses, Elon musk's ex refuses to hand over data and politically motivated French investigation? So, you know, the French are doing as they do and they're investigating, you know, corporate, you know, craziness and of course, Elon Musk is saying, no, right? Because that's, that's what, that's what they had of criminal gangs do. And then finally, on that note, this article at a propublica that I think you tagged, why Governor? Greg Abbott won't release his emails with Elon Musk saying that some of the emails contain intimate and embarrassing information. That is not a legitimate concern to the public. Intimate. Yeah. So The governor is doing, he's, you know, having business talk with with Elon Musk, who probably at this point operates, like 17,000 companies in the state and we can't get access to those because some of it might be embarrassing. That's that's his retort, I mean, isn't this, the behavior of criminal gangs? I mean, honestly, well, look, the if you're gonna spend years talking about how Free Speech absolutism and all the things, right, they don't hand over politically motivated data in France. Well, he's calling us to Elon Musk is calling up little politically, right? That's what he's calling it, but he's in the state. Does it politically motivating? Trump wanting sugar. And his Coke. It's politically India. They blocked over 2000 accounts, right? Because the government said they should the government said so. And then meanwhile, Free Speech absolutism that Greg Abbott Story, the reporter paid 200 dollars for Greg Abbott's, own Freedom of Information Act Right version in Texas. And then they just as soon as he paid and said, okay, can I have the information now? Texas is just said no I don't think you could say I mean as of 10 years ago you could not say notice stuff like this. Like so this is 10 years ago. Oh yes, 20 years ago. This is exactly what it was like. You'd never get that information I suppose. Yeah. But but more interesting to me is does the guy get his 200 bucks back like for the filing fee? There's no way. What is what what a graph that is? So what do you think about all this? You think I'm sick of it or do you think I'm don't care? I think you're sick of it because you definitely care like this. I care deeply terrifyingly. Yeah it's terrifying because this is the one this is the one industry that everyone ignores that our Collective Peril like no guard rails. No, no one is no. One is figured out any way to handle this. It's all like dual class shares and and boards that that protect their leaders. And nobody seems to care unless they're making more like, should should in the history of everyone should Pavel durov. Be a guy we listened to about stuff. Yeah. No you said he says the thing we should literally do the opposite of that thing that's usually though that works and baby. Croc AI chatbot. Can anything be more terrifying than you didn't cover? Yeah, that Grok like grock had a series of anti-Semitic, you know, close right praising. The next day signed a 200 million dollar contract with the US 20 million with the US government. You know later, I don't want to cover. Yeah. Is is doing baby grok AI like, can we Can we, maybe adjust the fact that grok isn't ready for you know? Prime time of any kind anywhere and Pavel. Duro is the guy coming to your defense on something. Let's not, you know, let's not forget this unethical, CEO of Tesla, it's the board still somehow supports. There was a story that In a federal filing with the US, small business administration, Elon Musk labeled neuralink as a small disadvantaged business because he's looking for some kind of like tax updated subsidies. For this is for a company is valued at 9 billion dollars. This is the kind of chicanery and unethical so I guess to the point back to deal book maybe taking a course on ethics, would be good for the Tesla board. At least. You know, it's funny is Ari of free float. I'm not laughing. Yeah. A Peruvian immigrant. Yes. Owns. 15% of the company. Number of times, we've used that call ourselves a disadvantage company are zero because it feels wrong. I do have a lifetime. Yeah, but I do have a lifetime supply of first class tickets to Peru. I've never used it. That's the funny thing. Uh, yeah, so, yes, I'm what. I'm, you're sick of it. You're sick of it. Okay, this game is a bit of a train wreck. Okay, yeah. Now, what's going to a bunch of fun anti-woke? Kind of headlines. There's this is a good week for it again. This is all the stuff that we missed while I was gone. I don't know what Matt was doing last week. That's not been reported to our HR manager raw. I have a tremendous amount of data and Cloud. Sure. I think you're grilling your kids like arms and elbows. I think it's what you're doing. Would have been more entertaining. Yeah. Magazine over woke Superman is nastier than their usual whining. This is one of the headlines. So I guess I don't know if you know this matte there's a new Superman movie and they're mad woke. The anti-walk braids that Robbie Starbuck type's. They're mad because they're the movie is calling Superman and immigrant. Now this is the this is the same Superman that was from another planet. From another not even from, like, not even from like Spain or or like Ireland, or or Guatemala. He's literally from another planet. He's from a planet and not even I don't even know if it's in our solar system. I don't remember. But no no no, no cuz I don't think it's on. Yeah, that's not our solar system. I mean, I want to third grade. And they're also mad I guess because the movie claims that Superman stands for humankindness which when I remember Superman, yeah. Wasn't he just like beating the crap out of bullies, basically, or like people billionaires, who wanted to destroy the world, isn't that Superman? Happen between Christopher Reeves and like 1979 being Superman and we loved him as alien as an immigrant merits for kindness. He was a white man, a little guy, he looked. He looked at what a white dude, though, to 2025, right? Like, I don't know where now, if he's nice. We hate him. Is that? No. What happened? Whereas Trump with the anti-Semitism crap. Now, like the and, you know, his auntie Harvard because of, the supposed anti-Semitism, all these comic books were there all created by Jewish like immigrants and like the 40s. These are all just like, all the famous Christmas songs. I mean, they're all from Jews. So what do we do if they don't? They're not actually paying attention like Pro Jewish or what they are. But okay, it's almost like yeah. So the background to the store was very Nelson Peltz. So, they were saying like this movie's obviously going to fail because it's so woke because, you know, go woke, go broke, right? This was the, this is the story for a couple of weeks. Fox News themselves were saying that the movie would fail because American audiences hate, kindness and immigrants. That's what someone actually said. Ah, no, I'm serious. But then, of course, that's, that's a full. That's, that's a fake know. I think that's actually from kellyanne Conway. I don't know if she's really Fox News. Yeah, that's not a real thing. That's not a real. This is what this is the reporting. At least that kellyanne Conway said that the movie would fail based on anyway. The point is, is that the movie is doing really well, I don't know who cares, right? I don't, I mean, this is what the first anti-walk story, The Second anti-walk Story. Missouri. Attorney general. I had his name here. What is this doofuses name? I want to name this guy. It is oh Bailey. Yeah, he is saying that d e, i fueled. I love this. This concept d e. I fuel. That's like a Molotov cocktail, right? Like d e, i fueled. Like, what is that mean? Even Gei fueled investing is ideological coercion of shareholders. He's saying he's warning in his new probe. He listened to this crazy dystopian talk. He says Missouri's deserve answers. As to why the Unseen power Brokers controlling much of corporate America are pushing a leftist worldview at the expense of millions of honest, investors the pastor George Soros argument, right? The proxy advisors have held Corporate America hostage, with their radical ideologies. And that Missouri will not tolerate this ideological coercion disguise as investment guidance. This is a bit heavy-handed even for the entire world, right? I mean, there I SS is holding America hostage. That's Corporate America. Yeah. Is it? But is this like he he's just investigating them. I don't really know what's. What is the point of I want to really? I, I wish she would call the show. How did you get to hear? No, honestly, Missouri adding a few women to the board. Got us to hear. I know like in. Like late 2023 early. 2024 everybody was putting out this press release in your little behind, right? Like so you're just you got to get the press release out. You got to make it sound even more extreme because if anybody's gonna pay attention to it it's got its got a sound more controlling Hot Wheels corrosion. Yeah. Um, meanwhile on boards like the diversity on boards is like, 10% of boards and 20%, you know, 257% are women, right? Like so it's not exactly like the ideological coercion. I mean has turned corporations into just like like some sort of, you know, Disney ride where every culture is represented. Yeah, the Tyson are, I mean, he's like a criminal. He shows up on board. He got Elon musk's brother, actual criminals on. I don't really know what they're talking about, but yeah, but, you know, like, you're late to the game. I this fall is The don't care category pretty squarely, because you're late to this game woke or not woke up Ubisoft. CEO was asked a bizarre question about Assassin's Creed shareholders in a shareholder meeting. So a guy actually stood up, I guess the one of their new games which is a wild success, I don't even know the name of the game features. A samurai samurai samurai who is afrikan based on historical fact. Yeah, there was a real, but this but the shareholders stood up and, and got all mad because this is too woke up. But, but here's the funny thing because this is the, this is where it all gets wacky in my head. Is that the shareholder is upset that it's too woke. But the game is a runaway success. So I don't understand, I thought the whole thing about woke is a was it was destroying shareholder value. So what are we talking about here? I don't help me out with this one. What's up here? I don't really get it, forget this share because huge To get for shareholder games made money so it's not the guy answering it. Yeah, Eve game off or whatever the French. Yeah, he's one of the brothers, right? Like who was wasn't where were they all accused of, you know, like all everything bad that's ever happened, like, in a sexual harassment, a lot of sexual harassment, a lot of stuff like that. And recently, they just announced that one of the brothers will be named after another exhaustive search as the CEO of like a partner or subsidiary sister Corporation when they're like some announcement that, like, and these are the guys they're mad at for. This is Help that to quote the response. Yes, this is what Ubisoft CEO said. When you get to play the game, you understand that the game is full of characters and the characters actually blend in with the goal, okay? In regard to this particular game. What was our goal? We wanted to Showcase characters. Oh, heroic Journeys. Yes, this is an actual character. This is someone who really existed and showcasing that character has been extremely successful. Yeah, that is why we decided to tell that story wanted to tell a different story. What is this anti-walk shareholder doing? He's like, he He's squinting at his TV Set and he's like, that's not the right shade of skin. I mean I know Japanese are not, I know they're not the right kind of white, but they're not. He shouldn't be that color. I mean, this is what he got mad at the color of a character in his way with video game. Does he know that the video game is made up? Does he know that like he's not actually fighting other Samurai? Does he know any of this is he? Anyway, I just thought that was cute and then my final anti-walk store the week. This is gotta be the whiniest. Story. I've heard in a long time. I mean this is like the new Jamie dimon says, this is just great in. This is the story. Was covered a lot in and out, billionaire, Lindsey Snyder. Says she is leaving California because doing business is not easy here, okay. The map, I don't know if you know about much about this this company, but this is just a nasty Stoopid Burger Company, right? That's all they do. They just make unhealthy burgers and Lindsay. Snyder is a nepo baby who inherited the company from her father and is worth 7 billion dollars because of disgusting burgers and she is upset because she's it's just a hard place to do. Its she moving to Tennessee. This is I don't know what the look I like, what is happening. What two things? Straightened me about this top happening. Number one, the company became a success in California because of Dad. Yeah, right. Dad did a good job Bill back on one of the most famous things in California, right? Like, it's must be hard to do business. She grew up, went to Citrus College, sis. That's not true, is it? That's true. It sounds delicious College. Listen to Wikipedia, she got no degree. She's on her. Fourth husband, the thing that might be hard is Lindsey Snyder. Yeah. Who was given a company and isn't actually capable of running a company much less anything else? I mean, maybe that's the hard part is anti-walk dead after these stories. I mean this is just now no. Okay. It's they're having their moment. There are moment of what their moment. So they're complaining about, we have Billion Dollar Empire. Now, this is what we're complaining about it. You have to wait for like it all to come like people need to be like Starving in the streets and then they gonna be like, why did we care about what was woke or not woke like and what is she complaining about that? Regulators came in and said, you know, you can't have this burger grease like like splashing on your teenagers arms every night. Like you got to do something about is that what she's mad about, like, Well, I mean what? I, okay, I don't know. Well apparently she's like a long-standing republican. Okay, really? She's just well. I know it's a very God forward company that prints like Bible messages and all its cups or whatever like on the cups. Yeah. But California has definitely been bad for them. It's it's really ruined them. So am I sick of it? All these anti-walk stories are my, do I not care? You don't care, you don't know wrong. I'm sick of it. Oh, really? Okay. Well, okay, we're on seven. Sick of its and three don't care. Three more stories. Thank God. I so if you're listening, you're staying this long. There's something wrong with you. Okay, okay. Now here's a weird story. And I like that they named her because we always joke that they never named the actual CEO, but now they're naming the wife of a CEO and the headline Lufthansa. CEO's wife, Vivian Spore Allegedly runs down women in Sardinia, Express his deep sorrow, so it's not allegedly. She killed a woman who was walking in a, in a crosswalk. She hit her with her car. She killed her. this is the so this is the wife of the CEO of tanza and I guess she's taking responsibility for it and she's saying that she will take she's a while. She's aware that a great personal loss cannot be repaired. She will take steps to mitigate its consequences. That's a that's a creepy jail. That's a really creep creepy like CEO kind of phrase right? How do you mitigate the consequences of killing a young woman. So that that's a weird story. That's a strange story. Wait, she going to jail? I hope so. I mean she was in a crosswalk this woman, right? Is there any excuse for? I mean, sometimes people like bolt out into streets at a nowhere and like I think you're not held responsible but across walk I don't know. I mean, that seems bad to me. But anyway, isn't it crazy? That the kiss cam story? People love but this one, no one's really talking about. This is the ultimate kiss, cam Story. I mean, you know, this feeling a woman in the crosswalk. This is the wife of the CEO, although they did, like, it wasn't HR, it wasn't HR of if it was the chief people officer, lift tons of maybe be a better story. I, I like that, like, The story actually, the headline of the story is Lufthansa. CEO's. Wife Vivian Spore? Yes, they named the wife but not the CEO. Yeah, I had to look at that. It's Carson Sports his name. But why on Earth? Do we never named the CEO? But the wife has got her full name in there. But if you're not going to name the CEOs, couldn't you have just said, Lufthansa, CEO's wife, allegedly runs down woman in Sardinia, why Neymar? I'm confused by what are the is there like an AP standard for not naming Executives? I don't know. I don't know. I can't follow it. You you are sick of it with this story. I don't maybe. I don't care. I don't know how I feel about this story. Actually. I How many more do you have left? Two more. I think two more sick of its are gonna win. I think you can't catch up. Yeah, how about this one? This is for my Jamie dimon says category. Jamie dimon being the CEO and chair of JP Morgan. The, I saw a story over the week that I did not tag know I tagged it by including it in the show that His. This is a classic Jamie. Diamond says, he says, when he was fired from City group, I think it was like, around the year 2000. He was fired from City Group. He said that his kid's came to him saying, like, are we going to be homeless? That's that there were worried, are we going to be homeless? Oh, do you think that's remotely possible? I mean, it definitely you think that's where that guarantee that they're so unaware of their of their wealth and privilege that, that everything was going to go to shit immediately because he got fired from one draw. They're gonna be homeless. That's guaranteed. That's a real. It's yeah, guaranteed homelessness. That's so, here's my, in my line of Jamie dimon, says stories. Mark Cuban says Okay, Mark. I've been says some of New York City mayoral candidate Zoran, I'm keeping policies. Don't have a chance. he then went on to say, He didn't want to say that Elon musk's new political parties, really smart in a key way. So I how do I feel about the constant headlines about what what billionaires think about things about? How they think the run the world runs and their opinions about everything? How do you think I what do you think? I think about that. This one's hard for me because I was right here on the coast. Yeah, right. Like I think he Mark Cuban. Has for the last two decades, done nothing but say what he thinks, right? Like, he owned a basketball team and said what he thinks except about the refs, which gives him find all the time. Um so this at least a zinc character, he also had a culture, a horrific culture of raw in his organization that he had the member, he had to Firehouse and hire a black woman to run it. The ultimate like CEO apology tours to get a black woman here. Just a little true. Yeah. Um, I just I don't I think you like me. Don't care. Like ultimately, yeah. Well this is a hard. This is must be. This is Cosby saying right? Like what, I just love that. Why do we have to ask? What do I care? What a guy from Dallas thinks about the politics like that run their own City. Mark, I don't know, I don't know if I need your opinion, and I know, I know that was a stupid headline to grab. Let's end on a high note, Matt. Yeah, let's see that. And let's get off that horrible game that I created before and let's pivot. This is the I have three more headlines. Are they stealing our Thunder Pop Quiz? So I wonder are these three stories. Are they stealing our ideas? Are they stealing our Thunder? Because I was from free flow. Yeah, free float ideas. Yeah. Because I was thinking like, this whole Scandal the cold place CEO, that's really our story. That's, that's us, like, don't get that. Don't get involved two years ago, zero people cared about that story except for us. Yeah. So these three headlines are they stealing from us? Are they stealing our Thunder? First headline, did the average S&P 500 CEOs? Do they earn in less than two days? What their typical worker earned in all of 2023? That's good. Populist math. We do that all the time. That's all. I mean, has anyone else ever talked about? Pay inequality based on days like this. Isn't that our thing? I don't think anyone else has done that one. Somebody must know, I'm gonna say, I'm gonna say, I don't think so, I don't actually not that this is something to be majorly, proud of that. We calculate to the minute. When this CEO makes more. Yeah, I'm pretty sure we came up with that concept. We pretty sure like there are CEOs that we were like, buy Bagels. Yeah, like Bagels. They already made his vision. Yeah. Even if they're late that day, they've made it more. Yeah. All right. How about this one? Speaking of that Scandal fake apologies popping up from CEO, allegedly caught cheating. I mean, is that SARS right? Fake fake. See all you just talk about fake apology, right? I mean we write entire category of news called the apology tour and we make fun of he had a whole. Yes, she onion thing which we're gonna which we're gonna regenerate with a bunch of stars isn't that ours? So whoever whoever put out that they stealing our Thunderman, what do you think? Uh, I'm gonna go with no they think. Apologies is a thing. Okay, I want this one. This is definitely ours. No one else talks about this. This is the headline, and this is the last one for our show. July, 22, 2025, businessman. This is the headline. CEOs, on boards is a governance blind spot accepted as normal but long overdue for scrutiny. Come on, that's us, Matt. I mean that's I mean nobody else cares, but us. All right. So In fairness that was it's an opinion and op-ed piece. Yeah, co-written. By Ralph Lauren Ralph Ward. Who is in advisor to board? I've been on his show. Yeah, I know. Ralph Ward, right? Yeah, he's we're connected on LinkedIn. So maybe we still from here, actually could have been Coastal in? Yes, I know. We didn't steal this but yeah, maybe I can, maybe we can have coal writers credit maybe we'll give them too cold. Authorship. Let's go up. Really? This is the thing that I even remember we didn't, didn't I ask Nella about this when we know was on the show? I I wanted because I had this idea that that I asked her whether she agreed with me that no American CEO, should be a lot on boards anymore. Like let's just end the I mean, the one thing he that Ralph wrote in this piece was The like he ends the piece by saying. The question. Why is CEO on the board? So rarely asked right. Like yeah, we were the ones asking it so I think he's writing the piece. Yeah. About our question. We're asking our our sort of stupid questions that we were asking. Now, we're asking Ralph, we're asking everybody why on Earth is the CEO on the board? What do you need them there for? Because the other facet of life is your your boss, you on a committee, right? Like, that's exactly what I was gonna say that. The funniest part of corporate America is that it's that you're letting the CEO set the agenda and run the meetings. That that provides his usually his own oversight, his pay and guidance. And that's the funniest comedy of all of corporate America that right. That's, it's a brilliant con game and then the best the best con, which Ralph your next piece, just listened here, your next piece. The best con is. Is 15 years of tenure too long for the lead, independent director. Are they the independent, right? They the same question. How at some point the jokes on us because they have no bosses. That's what Jamie dimon says. How often do you think CEOs? Like, they're running out of time for the board meeting they'd be like let's skip ahead to this agenda item can retention award for the CEO and we cover that one. Next I like let's skip ahead as a general rule General concept. All right come on. That's a long catch up show and just gotta do it. Yeah, just for the record, it was seven. Sick of its to five, I don't care right? And I do realize my, my horrible personality is basically that those two things. Anyway, I basically don't care it really neatly sums up. Most of what we do here that's is we are free float. Come back on Friday. We're off for proxy countdown, but we gotta wrap up of the week. You've also Got shareholder Primacy, Mike Levin and Ann Lipton coming out on probably late tonight or early tomorrow on Wednesday. Real. Real good. And remember it's page backer's. Becker
